THE
OFFICIUM ANTIPHON
also called the Introit
The
choir sings this chant as a refrain. The officium below is sung on
the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross (Sept. 14). The tropes of
the cantor are given in non-bolded letters, the more ancient parts of
the officium (sung by the whole choir) in bold. We would like to show
the ornate chant notation for this Officium; perhaps in the future we
may add the notation to this site. Technically, the Officium includes
also the Kyrie-Litany and the Gloria in excelsis or Hymn of the
Angels.
Officium
Nos autem,
trope ‘Iherusalem,’ tone 4
We who were
banished from Jerusalem’s royal glory when the first man sinned, who
are placed in the world and by sacred Baptism have been washed clean: But
as for us, it behooveth us to glory In the wood whereon the font of
life hath been restored, In the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,
Whose beginning is for ever beyond knowing, as is His end, In Whom is
our salvation, our life, and resurrection. Being present, He seeth
at once both past and future, By Whom we are saved and are set free. (Gal
6:14)
V.
God be gracious unto us and bless us : and cause His face to shine upon
us, and have mercy on us. (Ps 66:1)
Behold, let us
speak the mighty honour of the manifested Cross: But as for us, it
behooveth us to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, Hanging
thereupon, our Lord redeemed the world from death, He Who for us was
slain, a sacrificial Lamb, with the outpouring of His Blood, In Whom
is our salvation, our life, and resurrection, In which we all have
faith, now that our Creator is risen, By
Whom we are saved and are set free.
V.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit : as it was
in the beginning, and now and always, and unto the ages of ages.
Amen.
Echoing
with our voices, let us give praise to Him Who reigneth from the Cross: But
as for us, it behooveth us to glory. Have faith, all of you, in Him
Who hangeth on the tree of rending, In the Cross of our Lord Jesus
Christ, in Whom is our salvation, our life, and resurrection. Have
faith, all of you, in Him Who reigneth on the tree of peace-making, By
Whom we are saved and are set free.
