THE
GRADUALE / ALLELUYA /
SEQUENCE / TRACT
The
Graduale is begun by the cantor(s), then their intonation is repeated by
the whole choir, singing the antiphon. After the antiphon, the cantor(s)
sing the verse, then the Graduale antiphon is repeated. The Alleluya is
begun and sung with its verse following the same procedure. The Sequence
is sung antiphonally, with the ringing of the tower bells. After
the Sequence the Holy Gospel is read. On Sept. 14 the following
are chanted.
Graduale
Xpistus factus, tone 5
Christ
became obedient for our sakes, unto death, even to the death
of the Cross. (Phil 2:8.9)
Verse:
For which cause God also
hath exalted Him, and hath given Him a name which is above all
names.
Choir:
Christ became...
Alleluya
Dulce lignum, tone 8
Alleluya,
alleluya.
verse:
Sweet the wood, and sweet
the nails; bearing a sweet Burden. Thou alone wast worthy to sustain the
King of heaven and its Lord.
Choir:
Alleluya.
Sequence
Salve Crux
Rejoice,
O holy Cross, thou worthy Tree,
Whose
precious wood sustained the costly Price of the world.
That
the enemy who by a tree gained victory
Might
be reconquered by a Tree.
So
that the means by which death entered in
Unto
mankind’s first parents,
To
those who had been fashioned from the earth,
And
had been cast out from the Paradise,
Might
for all mankind also be
The
means of having life,
Truly
quickening them to life
By
the death of Christ.
Unto
our raging enemy,
Thou
art for evermore a sign,
Inspiring
him with terror,
O
thou most holy Cross!
Death
is afraid of thee,
And
the depths of hades fear thee,
For
thou sealest unto Christ His servants;
Praise
be to thee for ever.
