Icon of St. Chryse, martyr of Rome

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of the holy martyr Chryse (+269)

Feast: Jan. 30

Under the reign of emperor Claudius, the virgin Chryse was arrested, questioned, and mercilessly tortured for her faith in Jesus Christ our Lord. The bishop of Rome, Hippolytus, interceded on her behalf before the torturers and denounced them. Because of that protest, Hippolytus also was brought to court, was condemned and, after prolonged tortures, was sentenced to death. Along with Hippolytus and Chrysa, there suffered another twenty martyrs, including Concordia. St. Chryse suffered in the year 269 A.D. Holy Martyr Chryse, pray to God for us!

Icon: of unknown provenance, from the website pravoslavie.ru.
