Icons of
St. Clement, Bishop of Rome, successor of St. Peter, martyred 101
Feast:
Nov. 25 (in Western rite, Nov. 24)
A successor
of Holy Apostle Peter, St. Clement is one of the first great Patristic
writers of the Church. He was sent to a labour camp on the coast of the
Black Sea, where he built many churches and converted many prisoners.
Finally, he was thrown into the sea with a heavy rock tied 'round his
neck. One year after his martyrdom, the sea receded some two miles and
it was seen that Angels of the Lord had built for St. Clement a marble
tomb. This once-per-year withdrawing of the waters from the coast so
that pilgrims could venerate his sacred tomb continued to occur for
some 600 years.
