Icons of St. Donnan, Abbot
& Martyr of Eigg
Feast:
April 17
St.
Donnan was the first of the Irish missionaries to be martyred in the
Western Isles of Scotland. He began his monastic life in the monastery
at Whithorn. He stopped by Iona on his way to missionise the Picts, and
St. Columba prophesied "red martyrdom" (by bloodshed) for him and his
monastic companions. He moved later to a hermitage on the mainland just
opposite the Isle of Skye. After some time, he moved the Isle of Eigg,
where he and 52 other monks were slaughtered during the Liturgy on
Pascha by a local ruler in 618. Holy Martyr Donnan, pray to God for us!
