Icon of St. Epiphanius, Bishop
of Pavia in Italy, "The Peaceable" (above, at rt.)
Feast Day: January 21.
St. Epiphanius was born at
Pavia and elected its Bishop in 467. He rebuilt the city after it was
destroyed by Odoacer and was famed for his sanctity. He converted many
by his words, he gave aid to those stricken by the famine, and he made
many missions to promote peace. He went to such varied rulers as
Emperor Anthemius, Visigothic king Euric, Ostrogothic king Theodoric,
and the Burgundian ruler Gondebald. His success in preventing strife
won him the title of "The Peace-Maker." He reposed at Pavia after
returning from a mission to secure the release of captives held by
Gondebald and Godegisilus.
Holy Father Epiphanius the
Peaceable, pray to God for us!
