Icon of St. Ethelwold, Bishop
of Winchester, Restorer of the Anglo-Saxon Church
Feast: August 1
St. Ethelwold, together with
St. Oswald of Worcester and St. Dunstan of Canterbury, brought the
learning and piety of the Anglo-Saxon Church to a high level in the
10th century Revival. He was a great ascetic and Father of Monks.
Image from the Benedictional
of St. Ethelwold, a pre-Schism liturgical book. Note the crozier St.
Ethelwold is holding--it is in the old Tau-shape, very similar to a
Byzantine rite crozier. The Tau type of crozier prevailed in England
before the Schism of Rome in 1054.
