Icons of St. Eulalia of
Mérida, Virgin and Martyr of Spain

St. Eulalia of Mérida was a
12-year-old girl of Spain who denounced the governor Dacian for
attempting to make Christian renounce their faith. She was tortured and
put to death when she refused to sacrifice to the demons the Romans
called "gods." A hymn in her honour was written by the great
hymnographer of the Western Church Prudentius, and St. Augustine
mentions her.
