Icon of St. Finan, Bishop of
Lindisfarne (Holy Island)
Feast: Feb. 17
(This St. Finan is distinct from the Bishop of
Moville whose feast is Sept. 10.)
An Irishman, St. Finan became
a monk at Iona and then succeeded St. Aidan as second Bishop of
Lindisfarne. He was a friend of St. Oswy, King of Northumbria, and
baptized King Penda of the Middle Angles and later King Sigebert of the
East Saxons, whom King Oswy had converted. He strove to prevent the
replacement of Celtic usages by the Patriarchal, Roman practices.
