Iconic Drawing of St.
Findlugan, Hermit of Finlaggan, Islay, in Scotland
Feast: Jan. 3
This Saint was the brother
and disciple of St. Fintan of Doon in Ireland. He struggled at Doon
until he crossed into Scotland and took up the life of a hermit on a
little island in a loch. He was a friend of St. Columba, and once he
rescued St. Columba from death by throwing himself between the saint
and a would-be assassin. However, the spear of the assassin was
miraculously deflected from his garments and he lived on. He ended his
life in profound old age on the island that later bore his name:
Finlaggan. Holy Father Findlugan, pray to God for us!
Icon:
of unknown provenance. It appeared in the St. Herman Calendar for 2001.
