Iconic drawing of St. Foillan
(centre) with his brothers Sts. Ultan & Fursey
Feast: Oct. 31, All Hallows'
Eve
Born in Ireland, St. Foillan
went to England with his brothers Ultan and Fursey, in about the year
630. They built a monastery at Burgh Castle near Yarmouth, and worked
as missionaries amongst the East Angles. When their monastery was
destroyed by the evil king Penda of Mercia, Sts. Foillan and Ultan
decided to follow St. Fursey into Gaul and there they were welcomed by
Clovis II. St. Foillan founded a new monastery at Fosses, on land given
him by St. Ita near Nivelles abbey, which she had founded. Just after
he had finished celebrating the Liturgy, St. Foillan and three of his
disciples were martyred by a band of outlaws in the forest of Seneffe
outside Nivelles.
Iconic drawing is of unknown
provenance. It is believed that this drawing appeared in "Orthodox
America."
