Icons of St. Gervasius, martyr

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icons of St. Gervasius, martyr of Milan (1st c.)

Feast: Oct. 14

Sts. Gervasius and Protasius, the sons of the martyrs Vitalis and Valeria, are venerated as the protomartyrs of Milan. St. Gervasius was beaten to death with a lead-tipped whip, and St. Protasius was beheaded. Guided by a vision of the martyrs, St. Ambrose of Milan unearthed their sacred relics and they are venerated in the West upon June 19. Holy Martyr Gervasius, pray to God for us!

Top Icon: of unknown provenance, with Greek inscription.

Next Icon: mosaic from ancient basilica of San Vitale at Ravenna.

Lower Icon: of unknown provenance, with Greek inscription. In this icon, St. Gervasius is the Saint standing on the far left, with a scarlet cloak.
