Icons of St. Gregory, Bishop
of Agrigentum (Girgenti, in Sicily)
Feast: Nov. 23.
Born near Agrigentum, Sicily,
he spent years in the Byzantine East studying in monasteries. He was
ordained a Deacon at Jerusalem, then went to Old Rome and there was
appointed Bishop of Agrigentum (Girgenti). He was the victim of a plot
to besmirch his reputation with the plant, in his home, of a
prostitute, but was cleared at a hearing held in Old Rome. He wrote a
Greek commentary on the Book of Ecclesiastes and fell asleep in the
peace of the Church about 638. Holy Father Gregory, pray to God for us!
