Icon of St. Guido, Abbot of
Pomposa
Feast:
Mar. 31
As a
young man, St. Guido dressed in beggar's rags to go on pilgrimage to
Old Rome. After that he was trained in ascetic life by the hermit
Martin, who dwelt on the Po river. After spending time at St. Severus
abbey, he was elected abbot first of Ravenna and then of Pomposa. His
holy relics repose at Speyer in Germany.
Icon: unknown, but it appears
to be Italian of the 13-14th century. Usually later Western exemplars
are not used for the Project, but in this case the style was felt to be
suitably iconographic.
