Icon of St. Ildephonse, bishop

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of Holy Hierarch Ildephonse, Archbishop of Toledo

Feast: Jan. 23

St. Ildephonse was a monk at Agalia near Toledo, where eventually he was chosen Abbot. He was named Archbishop of Toledo about 657. He wrote a book about the ever-virginity of the Theotokos, and in gratitude for this work the Theotokos appeared to him and gave him the present of a chasuble. St. Ildephonse reposed on the 23rd of January in the year of Grace 667.

Icon is from an illuminated manuscript of unknown identity, but which appears to be from the first millennium or near thereto.
