Icon of St. John of Beverley, bp.

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of St. John of Beverley, Bishop of Hexham (+ 721)

Feast: May 7

St. John was the Metropolitan of York from 705 to 717. He ordained St. Bede to the priesthood and gave the gift of speech to a mute boy by his Lenten prayers.

Icon is of unknown provennace, available from St. George Orthodox Information Service, in England.

Old English liturgical books contain the following Post-Communion Prayer for the service on St. John of Beverly's feast:  Mercifully raise up those whom Thou dost refresh with the most-holy Mysteries, O Lord, through the helping prayers of Thy holy confessor and hierarch John, that we may lay hold upon the workings of our redemption by these Mysteries and by the way we live. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God through all the ages of ages. Amen.

From the Old Sarum Rite Missal, (c) 1998 St. Hilarion Press
