St. John was the Metropolitan
of York from 705 to 717. He ordained St. Bede to the priesthood and
gave the gift of speech to a mute boy by his Lenten prayers.

Old English liturgical books
contain the following Post-Communion Prayer for the service on St. John
of Beverly's feast: Mercifully raise up those whom Thou dost
refresh with the most-holy Mysteries, O Lord, through the helping
prayers of Thy holy confessor and hierarch John, that we may lay hold
upon the workings of our redemption by these Mysteries and by the way
we live. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth
with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God through all the ages of
ages. Amen.
