Icon of St. John of Gorze,
Holy Bishop (+ 974)
Feast: Feb. 27
St. John was educated at Metz.
On the death of his father he inherited a wealthy estate. After making
a pilgrimage to Rome, visiting a number of monasteries as well. Bishop
Adelborn of Metz then sent him, with Archdeacon Einhold of Toul, to the
run-down abbey of Gorze, which they revitalised with St. John as prior.
The emperor Otto I sent him on a delegation to Caliph Abdur-Rahman of
Córdova. On his return in 960, he was elected Abbot of Gorze. He put
into effect many ascetic reforms which later spread to other
monasteries in the area. Holy Father John, pray to God for us!
