Icons of St. Joseph of Arimathea, called also St. Joseph of Glastonbury, the Uncle of Our Saviour Jesus Christ (1st c.)

Feast: Sun. after Nativity of Christ, July 31 (in Western rite, Mar. 27)

According to a set of traditions, St. Joseph brought the Christian Faith to England after the Ascension of Christ. In the background is the Tor or great hill at Glastonbury, where the tower of St. Michael now stands. In St. Joseph's hands is the Holy Grail, which by tradition he brought with him from Jerusalem. It was in St. Joseph's tomb that Our Lord was buried.

Top Icon: by the hand of Aidan Hart, Oecumenical Patriarchate, UK.

Next Icon: by the hand of Aidan Hart.

Next Icon from an unknown source, apparently a Deposition from the Cross icon.

Next Icon: available from St. George Orthodox Information Service in England.

Next Icon: by the hand of J. Cole

Next Icon: from Holy Transfiguration Monastery, Boston.

Bottom-most Icon: of unknown provenance, showing the tradition that St. Joseph took to England with him the Holy Grail, that is, the chalice which Our Saviour used at the Last and Mystical Supper.
