Icons of St. Leonard, Abbot of Noblac in Limoges

Feast: Nov. 6

St. Leonard was first a hermit, later Abbot of the monastery of Noblac (mid-6th c.). He is known for having obtained from King Clovis the right to set free any prisoner whom he decided ought to be released from prison. Because of his energetic usage of this privilege, he became the patron Saint of those imprisoned unjustly. To the left in the icon above is St. Odo, the Abbot of Cluny (10th c.)

Top Icon: of unknown provenance. A triptych showing St. Leonard in the centre; a freed prisoner to the left, and St. Laura, nun-martyr of Spain, to the right.

Next Icon: from a 12th c. icon on Mount Sinai. Click here to see the entire icon, which also depicts St. Laurence of Rome & St. Martin of Tours.

Next Icon: from Hieromonk Cassien, Greek Old Calendar Hermitage, Clara, France. St. Leonard is shown on the right, St. Odo of Cluny on the left.

Final Icon: of unknown provenance; viewer assistance will be appreciated.
