Icons of St. Remigius, archbishop

Back to WESTERN SAINTS ICONS

Icon of St. Remigius, Archbishop of Rheims

Feast: Oct. 1 (and, in one English calendar of about 1170, Jan. 13)

St. Remigius was so famed for his preaching that he was made bishop of Rheims at the ripe age of 22. He ruled for more than 70 years, devoting himself to the introduction of the Roman rite into Gaul and the conversion of the savages of darkest Gaul. St. Remigius zealously opposed Arianism, and in fact converted an Arian bishop amidst a synod of Arian bishops in 517. He reposed at Rheims on January 13, but is feasted on October 1, the day when his precious and most sacred relics were translated. Holy Father Remigius, pray to God for us!

Top Icon: from St. Elizabeth Greek Old-Calendarist Convent in Etna, California. The icon is a thumbnail; click it to see greater detail. Our thanks to Romanos Emmert, who commissioned this icon, for providing the high-quality image. Many years!

Next Icon: of unknown provenance, appears on the website of Jean-Michel Dossogne of Belgium.

Lower Icon: of unknown provenance, old bas-relief of the Miracles of St. Remigius.
