Manuscript
illumination showing St. Ursmar, Bp., Abbot of Lobbes, Flanders
Feast: Apr.
19
St. Ursmar
may have been a native of Ireland. He was Bishop and Abbot of the abbey
or lavra of Lobbes on the Sambre in Flanders. He also founded the great
monasteries of Aulne and Wallers in Belgium. He organised great
missionary endeavours in that region, which met with great success
through the grace of Christ our Saviour. Upon the repose of the Saint
in the year of grace 713, his disciple St. Erminus succeeded him as
Abbot of the lavra.
Icon from
an unknown manuscript.
